Is Broadband The Same As DSL

Really the only thing that makes broadband and DSL different that one can only offer limited bandwidth in a given area. Cable companies are always talking about how much faster their internet connections are than DSL companies. In reality they both offer the same speed which is about 8 Megs per second. When they say it is so much faster they are taking the lowest speed from the DSL companies and comparing it with their highest speeds. However, there are differences between the two types of internet connections.

When you are getting the highest speed available from a DSL company, you do not have to share the bandwidth with everyone else in the neighborhood. Where as when you are getting the highest speed available from a broadband company you are sharing the bandwidth with everyone who has the connection in that given area. This is the biggest difference between the two types of high speed internet connection companies. You may find that another difference are the prices that the internet connection offer is for but we will go into that later. Let me go into more detail about the bandwidth sharing in a given area.

When you get your telephone and internet service from a phone company it comes from two copper wires ran from a terminal near your home. This terminal is fed with fiber optics from the company and these wires do not go anywhere but to this terminal and your home. However, with the broadband companies the fiber optics are fed to a node that is also near your home and from the node one copper wire is run to your home. That node can be what connects many homes in your general area to the same internet bandwidth. This can cause a problem at peak times when it seems everyone is online.

When you are sharing internet with your whole neighborhood it can cause your internet connection to slow way down. Depending on what you do on the internet this can be a major problem. When everyone is trying to use the same connection at the same time you are bound to experience some kind of problem. Some people may even experience times where there is so many people on the connection will give out on you. So if you need to do something really important and your connection gives out on you what else is there for you to do but wait until it comes back up?

There isn't a huge difference between prices in DSL and broadband internet services. You can find broadband services ranging in price from $40 to $45 with many different companies around the United States. You can get DSL services ranging in prices from $35 to $53 also with several different companies around the United States. Many of the DSL providers will also offer wireless broadband access for those who need the freedom to move around. In the end, only you can decide which is right for you.
